I officially found one of my favourite books yet. Its called Wings of Fire, by Tui T. Sutherland. Its awesome. =)
What IS Wings of Fire?
A series of books that take place some time either far in the future or past, because it has scavengers – that is, humans – but definitely doesn’t take place on one of the 7 continents. It’s about 5 young dragons (young dragons are called dragonets) who have to stop a huge war that has been going on for the past decade or so. They end up leaving 2 years before they were 8 years old, which they regretted. That is, some of them did.
Who are the 5 dragonets?
- Clay, a MudWing. He attacked the other 4 dragonets when he was born, but now he wouldn’t fight even if he was given the chance. He would rather have the world be a peaceful place without fighting, but he will fight if it means keeping the other dragonets safe.
- Tsunami, a SeaWing. She is brave, and powerful, and is sometimes considered the leader, as she is a very leader-ish type of dragon. Despite the fact that she can be slightly bossy, she doesn’t intend to be mean at all. She just wants the 5 of them to survive.
- Starflight, a NightWing. He is the smart one of the 5, and is often found reading one of his scrolls. Reading is his favourite thing, and he hates it when his scrolls are damaged. He definitely wouldn’t fight, as he really isn’t good at it at all.
- Glory, a RainWing. She is very colourful, being a RainWing, and isn’t the most active of the 5. Unlike other RainWings, she is not a lazy dragon, though only her friends really understand that. Most other dragons think of her as any normal lazy RainWing. Even though most dragons think of her to be very inactive, she doesn’t show that she cares. She mostly ignores it when others offend her, though the other 4 dragonets definitely know that it upsets her.
- Sunny, a SandWing. She is very positive, and can’t imagine anybody being evil. Even when the 5 dragonet’s guardians are being mean, Sunny tends to say something along the lines of “they wouldn’t really do that, would they?”
How did the war start in the first place?
Well, a scavenger – human – ended up killing the queen of SandWings. The queen’s daughters – Burn, Blister and Blaze – all wanted to be the new queen, so of course they argued, and by arguing I mean starting an immense war. The war made all the different types of dragons end up fighting some other types. Some types of dragons allied with others, which would make them more powerful. The NightWings stayed out of the war because they were to powerful, and the RainWings stayed out because they were seemingly defenceless.
Is the Wings of Fire a series or a single book?
Its a 10 book series. Each book focusses on one of the dragonets:
- The Dragonet Prophecy, Clay
- The Lost Heir, Tsunami
- The Hidden Kingdom, Glory
- The Dark Secret, Starflight
- The Brightest Night, Sunny (to be released in April 2014)

Despite the fact that The Brightest Night is the last book in the “first” series, Tui T. Sutherland (the creator of Wings of Fire) has announced that she will be making another 5 books, meaning another series. Nobody knows what the titles and release dates of these other books are, however, so for now we can have fun waiting. However, in her next post (at http://www.tuibooks.com), she will probably give us some information on her next books.
What ages are the Wings of Fire books targeted at?
Ages 9-13. Although I’m reading it to my 8 year old sister, and she loves it.
Where does the book take place?
Pyrrhia. Where in the world is that? I don’t know. There is humans there, but only a very minimal amount. At some point in the history of Pyrrhia, there was a big takeover (dragons take over) called The Scorching, so perhaps it is sometime in the far future? I have no idea.
This reminds me of the different clans from Warriors.
It should. Tui T. Sutherland is Erin Hunters. Meaning she made the Warriors series. And the Seekers. By the way, there are 7 different types of dragons:
- MudWings … Characters: Clay, eh.. mostly just Clay.
- SeaWings … Characters: Tsunami, Riptide, Anemone, Webs
- SandWings … Characters: Sunny, Horizon (dead), Dune (dead)
- RainWings … Characters: Glory, Jambu, Kinkajou, Silver (should I consider him a RainWing? He’s actually a sloth. :P)
- NightWings … Characters: Starflight, Morrowseer
- SkyWings … Characters: Peril, Scarlet (dead), Kestrel (dead) Ruby
- IceWings … Characters: So far, none that I’ve read of. Which is up to book 3.
Is there a movie for Wings of Fire?
As of now, no. Although I and many many many (including Tui T Sutherland herself!) want there to be a movie, and TV show. May the producers of shows make a show. 🙂
Where on the internet can I learn about the Wings of Fire?
A few different sites are good.
Those are my favourite, and are what I used for a bunch of this information (other than what I found in the books, obviously!)
Wow, this is one of my longest blog posts. I would check out those links if you found this post interesting. Ask your library to order the books! 🙂
Thanks for reading! =)
Note to Tui: If you read this, yay! 😀 Also, I love your books. And 10 of them. I now know what to read for the next 3 years (I mean, I can read one book in about 5 hour, which I read all night. It’ll probably just take 3 years for the 5 other books to come out).
